Selection of medicine is entirely depend on, How you erect your totality of the symptoms? what does it mean? in present, around us, we have seen. Totality of the symptoms means, Collect all the mental and physical symptoms of the patient and their Organs and prescribe accordingly.  Prescription mean, just putted down all the symptoms into the computer repertory and Medicine which covers maximum symptoms and marks, is the remedy of the case. How and from where actually this Idea has evolved? not a subject of discussion here, first we consider some experts view regarding totality of symptoms. Another one most important question has came in the mind. Why we have a need of totality of the symptoms? if totality of the symptoms means, collection of all the physical and mental symptoms of the patient, it means practice of Homoeopathy fully based on Materia medica is not possible. but in fact it is not true.  So called,  totality of the symptoms in which all mental and physical symptoms of the patient are needed, is necessary only for Repertory based practice. How far such type of practice is failed or succeeds, it is a matter of great argument.
Here I just want to present, some experts view regarding totality of the symptoms, now you will have to choose what is right and what is wrong.

BOENNINGHAUSEN VIEW - Dr. Boenninghausen view regarding his repertory was
"The repertory is not meant for use in those cases where there are clear indications for simillimum" in those cases the additional symptoms that might be secured from the patient, under pressure of questionin, possibly would confuse a case that already stands out clearly. or if the repertory is used here, it might be used in the manner of a quick refrence, to verify the leading indications for the remedy, or if some slight doubt were felt, to differentiate between those seemingly indicated. in clearly cut the cases, even if the repertorization verified the picture, for the student of materia medica this would have been a waste of time.

Interpretion - Here, Dr. Boenninghausen emphasis on materia medica based practice. Materia medica is at priority. Boenninghausen advise us, if clear cut indication for the selection of medicine has been found in the case, do not use repertory in those cases. Here Dr. Boenninghausen advice us do not put unnecessary  question to your patient in order to make your selection more proper, because it might be confuse you and make your selection improper. such type of unnecessary questioning where clear indication for selection of medicine are present, is nothing but a wast of time.
its mean, repertory is only a emergency tool. It should be use only when, there clear indication of medicine is not present. Another one most important fact has evolved from this discussion is, merely collection of symptoms of the patient as well as his or her organs, whether mental or physical, general or particular is not a totality of the symptoms.
So, such type of mechanical repertrization, in which we collect all the symptoms, putted down in the repertory and medicine that cover maximum symptoms and number is the remedy of the case, is useless one.
in the book on repertory of Dr. Sashikant tiwari regarding totality of the symptoms following views are mentioned.

Dr. Aegidi view - this is the view that Dr. Aegidi held on the repertory, which he communicated to master Hahnemann in the letter, Dr. Aegidi, who practiced homoeoathy in the nineteenth century, was not convinced about the use and practicability of the repertory in finding out the simillimum. Even tody many practitioners stick to the same view. to be a successful practitioner, Dr. Aegidi held, one should thoroughly master the Materia Medica pura

Interpretation - Here Dr. Aegidi totally deny the importance of repertory to find out the remedy. How repertory is useful or useless it is not a topic of discussion here. But very important point regarding totality of the symptoms has been evolved from Dr. Aegidi disscussion,  is The bunch of symptoms that is needed to put down into the repertory is not the totality of symptoms, instead of it, Homoeopathic practice can be successfully perform only basis on materia medica.
a direct definition of the totality of the symptoms has been written in the book of Sashaikant tiwari - " Totality is not the sum total of symptoms but it is a logical combination of the symptoms. now it is clear that merely collection of the symptoms of Mental general, physical general or particular symptoms is not the totality of the symptoms. now I am going to clear more correctly in my further discussion.
Now I want to redirect your attention, toward 3rd aphorims fo Organon of medicine.
"If the physician perceives what is to be cured in diseases, that is to say, in every individual case of diseases (Knowledge of disease, indication), if he clearly perceives what is curative in medicines, that is to say, in each individual medicine (knowledge of medicinal powers), and if he knows how to adapt, according to clearly defined principles, what is curative in medicines to what he has discovered to be undoubtedly morbid in the patient so that the recovery must ensue - to adapt it, as well in respect to the suitability of the medicine most appropriate according to its mode of action to the case before him (choice of the remedy, the medicine indicated), as also in respect to the exact mode of preparation and quantity of a required (proper dose) and the proper period for repeating the dose, if, finally, he knows the obstacles to recovery in each case and is aware how to remove them, so that restoration may be permanent, then he understands how to treat judiciously and rationally, and he is a true practitioner of the healing art.

Hint in this Aphorism - If the physician clearly perceives what is to be cured in diseases. Please pay your attention on word perceives. its mean if the physician want to cure the patient so the perception of the basic aliment is necessary. so according to Dr. Hahnemann The totality of the symptoms is the perceptible thing. it is not verbal, not writable. Now, it is impossible for an Ordinary physician to erect the totality of symptoms from the ocean of symptoms.
another one of the most important hint given by Dr. Hahnemann in the Aphorims of 153

" in this search for a homoeopathic specific remedy, that is to say, in this comparison of the collective symptoms of the natural disease with the list of symptoms of known medicines in order to find among these an artificial morbific agent corresponding by similarity to the diseases to be cured the more striking singular, uncommon and peculiar signs and symptoms.

Interpretation - after careful and repeated study of this aphosrism it has been clear that, sum of the symptoms including general and particular symptoms of the patent is not the totality of symptoms. but totality of the symptoms is something different thing.

1. According to Dr. Hahnemann- it is subject of perception
2. According to Dr. Boeninghausen -  it can be erect through logical combination of location, sensation, modality and concomitant
3. According to DR. J.T. Kent it is sum of Mental and physical general.

Now, you must have to choose which one is more correct. and practically verified.
